This weeks question is:
When do you think it is old enough to join facebook?

My son has been asking me lately to ask me to join.  He is going to be 9 on Sunday and is going into 4th grade.  Some of his friends from school are already on it.  I think he is too young and have told him no, not now.

My daughter is 11 and when she turned 10 I asked her if she'd like to have a Facebook account as some of her family members and school friends were on there.

She hasn't had much interest yet though, she just browses mine sometimes.

Some of my friends kids - from 8 on up - have accounts and, like their parents, send random game requests, virus links, chat with spammers and pass on internet hoaxes. I'm not sure where I stand on that.

Is 18 soon enough? LOL.

I let my daughter join at 15, but I have all her log in info and check her account frequently. I'm also her "friend" and so is my husband.

I think it depends on the maturity level but I would say sometime after 13 or 14 maybe?

Not sure, wonder that myself. My son is 11 but I won't allow him to have one yet. Technically, you are supposed to be at least 13 I think according to facebook rules.

For me I believe 4th grade is a little to early. My only reason is I had my girls on the internet at an early age and we had problems with them downloading things and giving our information even when we told them not to do so.
With my two youngest 14 and 17, we didn't even talk about Facebook until we moved 2 years ago. Even then it took us a year to be convinced it would be a good way for them to keep track of their old friends.
Set your limits as parents, educate your children on what they can and can't do, check into their acctount once in awhile to see whats happening, always have their passwords to everything.

My kids are still fairly young and haven't asked about it yet, so I haven't thought about it much. But my first instinct was 14. I suppose it depends on how involved parents are with what their kids are up to and how mature the child is so they aren't persuaded by others.

Plus, I'm not totally comfortable with how much info facebook stores and shares.

Personally, I think he's a little too young. Does he have an email account? I would think FB is a bit much. Like one person says it depends on the maturity, but if FB says 13 then that would be a good reason to give to hold him off & in the meantime have all the safe Internet usage conversations. Maybe there's an alternative that would be just as cool. When my oldest was about in middle school - early on - I sent up her email account and had those talks. Eventually as she proved herself she was allowed to do other things w/out permission but with me overlooking what she's doing. She's 19 now.

Hope that super long comment helped. :-) Have a good weekend and good luck.

Around age 15 or 16 but with strong supervision.

Yikes...I don't know, I just know my kids aren't there yet. :-)

I think every parent should decide this for themselves because they will know when their child is ready for Facebook or not. Just one thing though, I would, if they are under 18, still let them do Facebook under stricht supervision from the parent.

Facebook's Terms of Use are here: http://www.facebook.com/terms.php?ref=pf and the age limit is 13. I have younger cousins who are on FB, and if I was their mother, I wouldn't have allowed it. Even with their logins, I wouldn't allow it until they were at least 13. (Just my opinion, though.)
