Let me start from the night before. The snow started on Thursday, Oct.12th. I woke up in the around11pm to the sounds of cracking. I came downstairs and asked my husband what was going on. I took one look outside and freaked out. The cracking noise was from ALL of the tree limbs outside and the power lines. I opened the door and saw this. I wanted to take more photos, but my husband yelled at me and told me to get my (pregnant) butt inside because it was dangerous out there. You see, I was due with my daughter in January.
We tried to look in the back yard with a flash light. We have a HUGE maple tree in our yard and were worried a limb would hit the house. We really could not see anything so we went back to bed. I had just fell back to sleep when I heard a thud and felt the house shake. All I have to say is thank God we have a Florida room, because this limb pictured below would have went though a window. So back to Friday, Oct 13th (yes it was Friday the 13th). Jeff shoveled that morning for what seemed like forever. Being pregnant I couldn't lift the really HEAVY wet snow. The photos below are of our cars and my son being taller than my car...he was 5.
My back yard looked like a bomb went off...
So did the rest of the neighborhood...
What a difference 24hrs makes. This is the front if my house Saturday AM. Most of the snow has melted already. It was just crazy.
We finally could look in the backyard to assess the damage. This is the view of my backyard from my neighbors driveway.
We were so lucky that there was no real damage. We had limbs on my son's swing set (I bought that swing set 2 months before), the shed...
and our Florida room...
We were VERY lucky. We never lost power, but the street behind us did. Many people were without power for over a week (including my brother in law that lives around the corner). We did have our phone line cut because it ended up pulling off my house (no internet). My bestest friend's husband came over with a chain saw and he helped my husband cut all of the limbs and take them to the curb. We filled the front of my house and my neighbors house with wood. We went over their house and my husband helped him do the same thing with their yard...they have a HUGE yard with LOTS of trees.
So you say, what is the big deal? You live in Buffalo and should be used to snow storms...
This snow storm was NOT normal. Most of our trees had not lost their leaves yet. That and we received 2 feet of HEAVY, WET snow in such a short period of time.

Isn't it amazing , the power of nature? We've been really lucky before also, with floods and snowstorms. This year, we're stocking up on groceries and firelogs!
WOW! That's crazy! It looks almost like a snow bearing hurricane hit!
Goodness! Snow is so beautiful until it causes damage like this. I am glad you guys walked away from it all unscathed and without too much damage. You were definitely lucky!
Well... I was feeling pretty sorry for myself because we received a couple inches of snow yesterday, which is very unusual for us here in Minnesota. After reading this post, I guess I should just be thankful that it wasn't more? :-) Visiting from SITS. Hope you're having a good day...

I totally remember that day. I remember looking out my front window at the 3+ feet of snow in the street thinking how am I getting to work, Which ended up being closed as everyone dug out. Thanks for posting these pictures. I think I will do the same on my blog and post the pictures I have from that day. Check them out tomorrow! We can Compare!
Oh man! That is just crazy. Thank goodness you all and your house were fine!
We had a snow like that but in late March, when all the trees had leaves too. Same sort of mess in our backyard because we have huge cottonwood trees!
That is amazing (gonna have to look up what a Florida room is) and as I look outside at our early October storm I hope and pray that it passes before the night time since we will surely get cold enough to turn to snow.
I simply love your son in his Spongebob hat! Not a care in the world!
I didn't notice the leaves being on there as abnormal at first until you put that in perspective with it being October. Holy crap. That was a gigantic storm! I'm just glad you all were safe!
Who would have thought something so pretty and quiet (compared to rain storms) could be so scary!! This is not anything I'll have to worry about anytime soon!! When we did get a tiny bit of snow last year...it was totally a fluke, and I was upset because everybody else got more than we did!! Be safe this winter!!
Hi SITSta! Those are some crazy photos! My friend in Denver posted a comment on Facebook about snow in September and I've realized that living in Chicago can be cold and windy but not as bad as it could be!
Have a blessed day!
I had to drive home from a meeting that night in that storm and was so freaked out because i didnt have good tires and my car was goign sideways down the road.. adn I couldnt see where I was going most the way home. I called my husband on my cell and kept swearing and saying OMG.. I cant see! But luckily I made it home and the damage around here was very minimal!
yes.. that was some storm!

That is a crazy storm - for October! It's so weird to see all the snow, and then the tree with leaves on it still!
My stepmom and dad still talk about this storm. It was a crazy storm!!
I loved this post! I LOVE snow! I'm sorry about all your damage though! ;)
