My Tiny House - Part 2

As I said before, I live in a tiny house.

We knew we had lots to do when we moved into this home.  Most of it was cosmetic which I could live with.

Our bathroom was one of those rooms.  When we moved in it had a blue paint on the ceiling & walls above the tile.  We do not have enough money/time/know how to completely gut the bathroom, so here is my fix.  I painted the walls and ceiling white and took down the shower doors.  We had planned on changing out the vanity, floor, mirror & lights out one day.  Fast forward 5yrs later...it still needs/needed to be done.
About a month ago I got so tired of looking at the gold.  Not to mention one of the glass globes broke and I really needed to replace it.  Try and finding a globe to match a really old one.  Not possible.  I really liked the detail on the mirror/medicine cabinet, though.
I took the left over white paint that I had used on the walls and ceiling and painted the vanity, light fixtures & mirror.  I probably should have used an antique white, but I am LAZY frugal and wanted to use what I already had.  I bought 2 new globes.  I filled in the holes on the doors with wood putty and put glass knobs on.
Much better. Just amazing what a little paint will do.

And again...more before and after shots...
(please note, I want to paint all of the woodwork & door white, but my husband would have a heart attack...so I have left that battle for another day.)

Aloha Friday #14

It is Aloha Friday! In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that people take it easy and look forward to the weekend.

Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response. If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your comment below and link in Kailani’s blog. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!

This weeks question is:
How long have you lived at your current residence?

We bought this home 4 1/2 years ago.  This is the longest I have lived in one place (since I moved out of my parents house when I was 20).  The last 3 apartments I lived in were for about 3yrs each.  I am itching to purge "things", rearrange my furniture and reorganize.  That is one of the positive things about moving...going though everything you have and getting rid of things and decorating a new space.

I want to use my current armoire that I have my tv in as closed storage (my house is tiny & I am in desperate need of clever storage) in my living room and replace it with this...

I already have this Expedit Bookshelf in my basement filled with bins and toys.
(I LOVE it!)

Big Girl Bed

One week ago yesterday, we moved Lily into a big girl bed. The plan was to do it last Saturday, but when I put it up on Friday she was soooo excited so we had to do it Friday. She slept thought the night and has all week. She has always been a great sleeper. The bed frame was mine as a child. My grandmother originally bought the bed set for my aunt when she was little and she used it for a couple years and then it was given to my parents for me. It is an antique bed that has a metal box spring and a shorter mattress. (I also have a dresser that matches, not the one in the photo below...that is Lily's changing table) My son was in the bed until we bought him a new mattress & box spring last winter. Lily's bedding was bought at Ikea when she was less than a year old. I spent hours on Saturday finishing putting her room together. I still need to take more photos of the rest of the room. I do have to share that the curtains are made of pink denim. I found a bolt of it in the clearance section at JoAnn's. There was black fuzzies through it, so they marked it clearance. The fuzzies washed right out. We made 2 sets (4 panels) of curtains for $10!
Here is a photo of my son's newly painted room that I painted on my staycation. This is the true turquoise by Glidden Ian picked out, remember here? The original plan was to put it on one wall and then tint white paint with the rest of the quart and paint the other 3 walls. I LOVED it so much we decided to buy a gallon and paint the rest of the room that color. BTW the paint went on beautifully (it only needed ONE coat!!) and I will definitely buy it again in the future. The walls are bare because I need to re-hang his pictures.

Been busy...

Over the past week during our staycation I...
  • went on a day trip to Niagara On The Lake
  • went on a day trip to Olcott (little beach town on Lake Ontario)
  • went wine tasting...yum!
  • ate out ALOT...yum!
  • painted my son's room
  • painted my nightstands white (they are 4 cubes that were painted dark green)
  • put together a new bed frame we bought from IKEA (bought for my room...we never had a bed frame, just the standard one that you get when you buy the bed)
  • painted the basement door with magnetic paint and about 6 coats of white paint...still need to do the other side and the chalkboard paint.
  • mailed my computer to HP...not waiting patiently for it to be returned to me.
  • trying to catch up on my favorite blogs & e-mails on this SLOW laptop
  • went to PA to pick up the kids, stayed 2 days
  • have been doing the happy dance all week because I won a photo contest over at A Cowboy's Wife. Just waiting for the package to arrive with my new Flip Mino HD Video Camera.
Did I say I miss my laptop terribly? I can not download photos in this laptop and I hate the regular PC in the basement. Yes, I am aware I should not complain, at least I do have another computer to use...but I love my laptop. I did download some photos I took on our day trips and put them on my thumb drive and some CD's. I just need to fix them. I can not wait to share Olcott & Niagara on the Lake with you. Both places are rich with history and we had a great time. Here is a photo I took in Olcott...straight out of camera. Hope you have a great week!

My tiny house - PART 1

I live in a Tiny House.

My house is just under a 1000 sq. feet. What is funny about that is I told my husband that I didn't want to look at any homes under 1000 sq feet. When we looked at it 4 summers ago we had no idea the square footage of this home. It was an open house and it was not on the listing.

Our house has 3 bedrooms. Not included in the square footage is the partially finished basement and a full usable attic. Since we have been here we have painted all of the rooms except mine and my son's (his is next), taken down hideous wallpaper, ripped out bushes, remodeled the kitchen, ripped out carpet, blew in insulation, replaced the hot water tank, replaced the furnace, added air conditioning along with many other little projects. Someone asked me recently about what I did about space. Well, all I have to suggest is to go vertical. When remodeling my kitchen I made sure we had lower cabinets that we had drawers in. This way my husband can't ask me where things are because he can pull out the shelves and see where everything is.

So here are photos of my kitchen before:

I have to share that the counter top on this side was NOT screwed down and moved. Also, there was a piece of wood on the end...that also was not screwed down. After we ripped them out, we realized that the one cabinet was from the other side where the dishwasher is now. When my kitchen was like this we had all of our food in the basement. I had no room in my cabinets for my food.I absolutely hated this tile! While talking to my grandmother one day about the kitchen remodel she emphatically told me that I could not remove such beautiful tile. Ummmm...sure...I like some old retro things, but this was awful! While creating my kitchen using IKEA the kitchen software it would keep telling me that the bottom cabinets were not far enough apart. LOL, yes we can not open both sides at the same time...I guess now a days people have to have everything open at the same time. I couldn't figure out what to do with that window. We can touch my neighbors house (not really), so we put that privacy film on the whole window. It lets in the light, but my neighbor can not see in.
The garbage can is in that cabinet to the left of the sink. You pull out the cabinet and it is in it. I found the long narrow garbage can at Target. Please disregard all the dishes in the sink. LOL....at least the counters were clean when I took the photos. Psst...they are not clean now. I have plans for that basement door. Our kitty litter is in the basement, so that door is open all the time. I am planning on painting both sides white. The one side I am going to paint with magnetic primer 1st. Then make 2 blocks (one on top and one on bottom) and paint them with black chalkboard paint. I bought the paint already, but I am going to do it August when I get past the other things we have going on.

All of our cabinets, counter top and faucet are from IKEA, our hardware we bought at Target and the reused our old sink. In the photo above that cabinet with the doors has 2 shelves that pull out. So does the high cabinet (cabinet with the pumpkin on it) where all of my food is.
